I'm going to be getting a 486 notebook in a few days to run Linux on.
Before I decide on one, I'd like to make sure it's compatible. Right
now I'm looking at MEI's WinBook, a PC Brand, a Compaq Contura, and
one by AMT (?). All except the Compaq hae the keyboard in the right
place, i.e. up near the screen with a palm rest and trackball below.

How does Linux deal with power management? Can it handle the hard
drive spinning down after a few minutes of non-use? How about
invoking sleep mode? I would like to leave it on most of the time,
but suspended when it's not being used. Do any of these models go
into sleep mode when the lid is closed? This would be optimal. Then
I can open the lid and pick up working where I left off.

A few of the companies I called said their power management was
totally through the bios, but another said set up was through a dos
program called power.com, which would have to be disassembled and
ported. (possible, but not great.)

ALso, X should be compatible with any of these displays in mono mode,
right? And I an switch to an external monitor for more resolution?

Many thanks,
+Jonas
