Xconfig twiddling is a terrible thing!

My experience is limited to installing SLS. IMHO the setting
up of Xconfig is a real hurdle in installation of X.

I think the PC world has something to teach us in this regard. The
dumb user picks a card, picks a monitor, and the GUI comes up. (Just
curious: when there is a MSW driver associated with a card, that driver
knows properties of all possible monitors?).

Right now it seems that a small database of "known card-monitor
combinations" exists. I think we need a better user interface in
utilising this, so that if the end-user is lucky enough to have
a card-monitor which is in this database then installation goes
through painlessly. This could be a logical next step in improving
SLS.

Further, I think the number of users of Xfree out there is really
immense, so it should be possible to ask the net to help in building
up this database further.

Thanks,

        -ans.
