Oh hum!!  A whole day wasted and not one iota further!

How on Earth does one configure net-2?


I have searched through the last 300 entries in this list and find only
sporadic mention similar problems, so either I am exceptionally dull, or else
nobody used this net stuff.

After much trial and error, it gradually began to dawn on me that I should have
something line

ifconfig eth0 134.169.53.9 up

in my rc.net file, but all I get are error messages like

SIOCSSIFADDR Invalid argument

and many more.  Since ifconfig eat a similar line with "lo" instead of "eth0",
it would appear that net-2 does not like eth0.

I could find not a single byte of documentation beyond the man
pages, most of which were either not very informative, or incorrect.

I have a SMC Elite16 card, and had no difficulty with the old network stuff,
except that it occasionally froze up on me.

If anyone had an explanation of these mysterious error messages, or can send me
copies of their configuration files, I would be more than grateful!
