After receiving the endless "Error 0x04" messages, I consulted the LILO FAQ which mentioned that it was a problem with the BIOS and that I should remove the "COMPACT" option from the LILO config file. Ok. So how do I do that if I can't even boot? Luckily, I have a notebook which will happily boot from the disk. Once I did that, I removed the COMPACT from the config and typed install to reinstall the LILO stuff back onto /dev/fd0. This gives me an error: "Sorry, don't know how to handle device 0x0101" !!! Glancing at the LILO manual, it tells me I need to put an entry in the disktab file for this device. Why isn't fd0 already there? I copied over the commented sample for fd1 and changed everything for fd0. Typed install again, and it appeared to work. So now I try to boot this newly configured LILO on the other machine it failed on previously. This time I only get as far as LIL- and it dies. The manual says this is a corrupted description table (??). I try to reboot this disk on the notebook and it failed likewise. Please note that the boot disk can easily be mounted and used on both machines with older versions of Linux. I don't know why LILO is having so much trouble with the disk geometry. Any LILO gurus know how I can get past the "Error 0x04" and "Sorry,..." error messages?
