I think I know what happened. My linux partition is on my second
drive, so I think that just entering lilo probably overwrote the MBR
on /dev/hdb and put the image into the root partition, i.e. /dev/hdb2.
Anyway, I tinkered with the lilo config file this afternoon - removed
the delay for a start, and re-lilo'ed (if there is such a word), now
everything is fine.

My config:

boot = /dev/hdb2
install = /etc/lilo/boot.b
compact
image = /Image
        label = linux
        root = /dev/hdb2
        vga=normal
