I have noticed this thread on a version list, I relize this would be a
slightly difficult thing, but if demand is high enough, I'm willing to
volunteer for such a job. I already have a list for myself that I maintain
to keep an eye on things on the system (The users have a habit of compiling
new utils faster than I can find them and install them in /usr/bin etc.. :)
A basic framework for the list as follows:
1) Name of program
2) Version Number
3) Location of File in directory structure (This will vary though)
4) Author Name or organization (Very handy)
5) Ftp Site list (Only a few would be listed, major sites and dirs)
6) Notes (For kernel incompats etc...)
Posted once a month or twice a month as needed.
It is possible to keep up to date based on the comp.archives and c.o.l.a and
Gnu groups, but it would be even better if this gets going for the authors
to fire off a quick message to the list maintainer with the version number,
possibily a change log and ftp site uploaded to.
I'm presently working on a friendly menu based sysadm util suite, but this
is on the back burner at the moment, so I am availble to maintain this list
of versions.
Any comments or suggestions ?
