As to when it makes it into the "normal" kernel - that depends on how
well the testing goes.  The new code supports SLIP (and PLIP) along with
implementing a lot of previously nonexistent features (and hopefully
fixing all bugs), but as with any major re-write it probably has some
new bugs that will have to be ironed out..
