I've been thinking about designing a distributed filesystem based on my
experience with AFS and NFS, and articles I've read on research filesystems.
This wouldn't be restricted to Linux, though Linux is easier than most
systems to write a filesystem for. I've made some notes, but I haven't
started designing anything yet. If anyone else is seriously interested in
this, email me.

There is enough public information to write a free AFS client without
Kerberos authentication (there are a few problems that can be cleared up
with a network monitor; except for Kerberos authentication there aren't any
features that require disassembling code). I've considered doing this; my
biggest concern is that it might cause people to use AFS. I've had enough
problems with AFS that I don't want to inflict it on anyone.
