BTW- I tried a 3c503 first, but either the kernel was compiled for thin-
     net or the "eth_if" problem could not be overcome.  Getting the *OLD*
     8003 solved my problem.  I am trying to use "off-the-shelf" SLS, so
     kernel-compiling was not an option.
