Hmm...  Did you know that /dev/modem is symbolically linked to /dev/ttys1 ?
My modem is on /dev/ttys0 so I had to change /dev/modem to link to /dev/ttys0
so I could refer to /dev/modem.

Does uucp use /dev/modem (what did you configure it to use?)
