What about GNU Emacs Calc?

It's supposed to be 80%+ of Mathematica.

On typesetting, I used Calc in batch mode to process huge (1500Char)
fortran equations to tex (since Calc understands a bunch of formats
and will convert) and then displaying nearly realtime with xdvi. Some
were 11+ screens wide.
