What I do if I want to read something from TeX in ascii is to run it through
latex at school, and then run the dvi file through dvi2tty. Looks fine,
even makes the pictures with ascii bars and dashes.

For people who don't have TeX installed, what I would suggest is people post
things in dvi format. That can be converted to just about anything, and
the programs to do this are rather small.
