Greetings all:
This is a followup to my post of yesterday asking about getting files into
linux. I received several suggestions, including some that had never
occured to me. These ranged from about 10 different ways to get the files
from the rawrited floppy, to installing mtools (I tried, I could not get it
to work), to using the mount command to mound the MS-DOS partition (this
also did not work). Also, I receveived a suggestion to use the
mcc-interim release, but it would also take me 6+ hours to download the
files, so i am shying away from that.
In any case, I now have all of the basic GCC stuff in Linux. Now I have
another problem.....
in the /usr/install directory, you are supposed to, according to the
README, run the inst2.x prgram so it can put things where they belong and
do whatever it has to do. Perhap i'm confused, but the program will not
run when I type 'inst2' or 'inst2.x' The privs appear to show it as
executable.
In any case, here are the couple of questions I have:
1) What is the proper way to "mount" a MS-DOS drive? I have Linux on
hdb2 and wanted to mount hda1. I used the following (which was sent
to me so i assumed it worked for somebody) command:
mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt
And then it gave me the error message of:
/dev/hda1 already or /mnt busy
I tried it with different directories besides /mnt without success.
2) what am I doing wrong regarding the inst2.x program? I do not have
the kernel sourse installed anywhere yet, but i don't know if that is a
factor.
3) Any chance that a com.os.linux.newbie groupe can be formed *smile*? I
feel silly asking these simply questions in this forum when the next post
will probably deal with writing patches for SCSI devices or something
equally boggeling. I am installing this with the purpose of learning
about *NIX structure and am really coming in quite blind as to even some
of the basics of the OS.
In any case, I thanks you so much for your time and patience.
Robert
