Is it possible for those of us who administer anonymous ftp sites
to discuss what can be done to provide replacements for the
facilities which will be disappearing from banjo?

I've sent mail to a few people who have been providing packages to
banjo. For example, hlu now has an account on tsx-11, and will be
placing new GCC files in ~ftp/pub/linux/GCC directly.

If other people who are providing major packages would like FTP accounts
on tsx-11, that can be arraged, within reason. If you are interested in
doing so, please send email to ftp-linux@tsx-11.mit.edu.

Note: tsx-11 is my personal workstation, and while I don't forsee it
going away anytime soon, this something that cannot be ruled out. If
someone else in the U.S. is willing to volunteer the time, energy, disk
space, and network bandwidth to be a major FTP site, that would be a Good
Thing. I am a bit nervous about people talking about TSX-11 as the only
Linux repository in the U.S.; that sort of responsibility can very
rapidly make this sort of job (which tends to be a thankless one that
people take for granted) a lot less fun. :-)

P.S. Yes, I will try to make the speed at which uploaded requests to
tsx-11 much faster than it has before. But it is difficult when people
upload packages without telling me what they are, and why they're better
than an already existing package in the archive. I would appreciate it
if you would keep that in mind the next time you read complaints about
how difficult it is to find stuff at an FTP site because everything is
disorganized and there multiple versions of a particular package. I'll
do my best to try to reduce that, but all you people who upload things
to tsx-11 are going to have to help me out.
