So what do you think, is this the way to go?

Just the same thing I thought last night hacking 0.97 kernel (actually
just trying to recompile it). Yes, I'm sure the way Lars wrote about
is the right way to go, absolutely.

One thing I'd like to see in these "official releases" is that the stuff
needed to compile programs like ps, top, w and so on would be included
without kernel source. I'm an absolute beginner in kernel hacking, but
I think with some #define's and #ifdef's in already existing /usr/include
files it should not be too difficult. With small disks you won't like
to have extra stuff on your disk (like kernel source code).

Today I'll start checking if Ingres89 and Maxima can be compiled to linux.
I really hope 5 megs + 10 meg swap will be enough, or otherwise I have
to restart the thing early September when I get second drive (and more
swap space B-). Does linux support multiple swap partitions (no, I have
not read any readme's, sorry)?

It is left as an easy exercise to the reader to correct all typos. (-me)
Opinions(?) are mine (if not stolen), NOT those of Univ. of Jyvaskyla.
