rootimage-0.97 will *not* contain ps or releated utilities, because of
the problems you describe.  The unstripped kernel executable is needed
to rebuild psdatabase, and this is not made available anywhere, so it
would require a rootimage to be released for every bootimage.  This is
incredibly timeconsuming, however, for such a small gain, that it is
simply easier to not have ps on the root disk and dodge the issue.

This may change in the future, but I won't make any promises about
that.  :)

Oh, by the way, you might not need to recompile ps - try a ps U after
you have recompiled the kernel.
