I haven't looked at Interviews in quite a while, but since it's written
in C++, which encourages data hiding, I would be very disappointed to

Not at all, you are right on target.  BTW, several people, including
H.J., Linus, Eric Youngdale and at least a couple others whose names
I've unfortunately forgotten, contributed valuable ideas used in 
developing the jump tables.  All I had to do was implement them.
