After weeks of development and testing, I'm finally ready to announce
the release of the 8514/A X server for Linux.

The X server is based upon Orest's 1.1 release, and should be
compatible with his upcoming 2.0 release.

The requirements for running this X server are an 8514/A register
compatible video card, Linux 0.96c.pl2 or newer kernel, Orest's 1.1
release, Xlinux8514.T.Z, and GCC 2.2.2d. Installation instructions
can be found in the README in Xlinux8514.T.Z.

For those of you who want to further optimize the server or port it to
other platforms (e.g., SVR4 or 386BSD), I've provided source code
cdiffs to Orest's xsrc.1.1.T.Z in the x.8514.src.T.Z file. If you
would like to do further development, please contact me at the e-mail
address below.

Unfortunately my free time has run out, so this will be the only
release of the 8514/A X server unless someone has the time and
experience to pick up where I have to leave off. I've delayed my
dissertation research during July and August to get this ready, and
while my professor has been patient with me, I cannot push him any
further. If anyone would like to volunteer, please contact me at the
e-mail address below.

If you have problems setting things up or getting things working,
please send e-mail to the X11 channel on the linux-activists mailing
list or post to c.o.l. This way everyone can benefit.

I will try to upload these files to sunsite.unc.edu, tsx-11.mit.edu
and nic.funet.fi in the next few days. The main distribution site for
this package is ftp.cs.unc.edu in the /pub/martin directory. The
Xlinux8514.T.Z and x.8514.src.T.Z files can be found there today.

Thanks,
Kevin
