So far as I know you must be using the extented file system.
This allows file names on the order of 256 characters (even RMS doesn't
use names this long).

Get the efs mkefs and efsck from tsx-11.mit.edu ALPHA.

(BTW yes it can be used for a root system.  The kernel mounts
check for Minix magic numbers, if these fail it checks for efs)
