I have recently begun installing Linux 0.96c. Unfortunately, I've gotten myself caught in the chicken-or-eggs dilemma of not having mtools or kermit so I could bring basic utilities to my HD, including mtools and kermit. Fortunately, I believe I've got a solution in the files comp1.1, comp2.1, & comp3.1 which I've downloaded and rawritten, assuming they are linux disk images. Unfortunately, I can't mount my floppy drive so I can access them. My past experience is that of a fairly clueless *nix user, so my problem is very possibly due to never having used the mount command before. What I wrote was: #mount /dev/fd0 /mnt The first time I try this, the floppy drive whirrs, and I'm told Linux has found a 1.2 M disk in the drive (comp1.1). Then, which is the same for all latter attempts, I'm told the magic match is bad (or something), and that either /mnt is busy or /dev/fd0 is already mounted. /dev/fd0 couldn't be mounted, as best as I can tell, and I can't imagine who /mnt is busy. Needless to say, I need to be able to mount the floppy drive, but I don't know how. I apologize if this is a bit long or trivial. I'd read the FAQ at least three times, but nowhere did I see anything about mounting floppies (or at least to the depth that I need. BTW, I've been considering getting X11. I figured I'd need more than the 4M of RAM I have for it to work, so I set up a 2M swap partition. Is this enough, or can I get decent performance at all with 4M at 33 mhz? Did I hear right that someone had written an ATI driver for X11? Would that mean that my ATI Wonder will work? So far Linux seems to like it. One last question: has anyone ported vi? I perfer gnu-emacs for most text editing, but IMHO vi is just fine for quick-n-dirty editing jobs. For all of this, Thanks in Advance.
