A few weeks ago, I saw a post suggesting that you could switch from a 386
processor to a Cyrix 486 (DLC, I think), along with a Cyrix 387DLC, and
you'd get almost the same functionality for much less.

The problem is that Cyrix (though they are working on a consumer-replaceable
chip) is not completely satisfied with the compatibility of such a move, and
is saying not to do this.

The bottom line is that for now, the 486DLC is an "OEM only" chip, and that
if we were to buy one, cyrix would not support it in no way. So if you paid
your money, and the store you bought the chip from wouldn't buy it back,
you'd be stuck.

If you'd like to call Cyrix: 214/234-8388

This is not to say the chip is bad in and of itself, it just means that it's
NOT guaranteed to be a plug and play replacement, and that the company that
made the chip will not support it when used as such.

The bottom line Cyrix gave me was wait until the first wuarter of next year
for a plug and play chip, or go out and buy a REAL 486 motherboard.

Too bad...I was beginning to drool while waiting for my financial aid
money...;^)
