Sigh.  People should read the docs.. ;)

Type 'ps U /usr/src/linux/tools/system' Where the file name  is the
filename of the point where the compile linux image lies. NOTE: This is
usually NOT the image you boot from, as I am fairly sure the image it
points to can't be a stripped image. This will then let ps work like a
charm. ditto free et al.
