Thanks to those who replied to my enquiry. I have created a DOS extended 
partition which will become the linux swap area later. And the unified mtools
works just fine :-).

On another note, I am seeing two other problems which people may be able to
comment on:

1. elvis 1.5 crashes with memory fault--will not run at all. I have gone
back to the earlier version from 0.95.

2. pcomm95A ismuch cleaned up for terminal control with the help screens and
setup screens etc. -- BUT -- still don't work! :-(

After I dial and get a connect message the screen goes blank and I get _nothing_.
I thought this might be a parity problem, but there is none of the onscreen
garbage I would associate with this. It seems to me the characters are just
not getting through. Has anyone used pcomm successfully? Any gotchas? I know
there has been discussion of this, but nothing I have seen was conclusive..
