Which tar should we be using?  The one that's in the 0.95a root-image seems
to be the same as the one in the 0.12 root-image...I tried out the one that
came in the utils.tar.Z file that Linus put out with 0.12 and it has worked
flawlessly (so far :)...anyway I have been able to untar gcc2.1 with no problem
so I am happy...for now............
