weird .95 problem

I downloaded the boot disks for linux, they booted fine, and disk shows
my current hard drive partitions. I then tried to mount one
mount /dev/hdb3 /mnt
and get mount error 2 
Does linux now look at partition types or something? Any idea how
I can get it to mount my current partitions?
