Re: Why are hard disk reads so much slower than writes?
I don't understand this slow behavior. I am going to describe my understanding of the situation, and perhaps somebody could read over my explanation an point out where the mistake (or missing piece) is. I would imagine that if iozone were performing lots of "read(fd, buf, 8192)" calls, then it would effectively cause this behavior: * iozone calls read(fd, buf, 8192) * kernel context-switches in. * kernel fetches a disk page (8192) bytes from disk into cache. * kernel ...

Who cares? Linus didn't invent Linux to make money, and I don't use it because I think it's going to displace DOS. It seems to me as if the mainteance-staff at tsx-11 in generis are slow at moving files from the upload-directory to the accessible linux-subdirectories. Sunsites policy allows for downloads before staff-validation, so I guess the solution lies in uploading to them instead of or in addition to tsx-11. Re: Why are hard disk reads so much slower than writes?
The size of the disk block that you are using makes a big difference in the speed of reads. If these numbers are for 512 byte reads, it would not surprise me very much. On the other hand, if this were for 8192 byte reads, I would be quite surprised. With the 0.99 kernel, there are patches to the minix and extfs filesystems which will arrange reads in a way that gives a higher throughput. There is also the capability to use a read ahead, which is used by the scsi code to ...

Re: Zombies are very nasty little buggers
Well, first off, you should understand how zombies are created. A zombie is a process which has terminated (i.e. it doesn't exists any more for most practical purposes), but its parent (whoever forked it) hasn't acknowledged its completion yet. A process can acknowledge the termination of its children through the various wait() system calls. Since these aren't real processes, they cannot be killed (even with -9), and they will only go away when their parent cleans them up, or their ...

Re: Zombies are very nasty little buggers
In article <1580@yetti.UUCP> You can kill the zombies with 'kill -9 <pid>' where pid means the process-id reported from the ps. If that doesn't work, try to debug not under root. If it's possible, add a new user and use this new user for developing software. problems with 'free'
Ever since I recompiled my kernel with the 98pl5 source tree and Eric's fscsi.06 source patches 'free' reports some huge number for the cache and never seems to change. The cache is reported as the only memory available as well. I also tried the fscsi.07 diffs today and the make won't run. It indicated problems with various file.c files I think (at least as far as the make got before it bails)??? --cheers -- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ...

Re: Can't boot SLS properly.
You need HD disks for boot and root disks - 720 K is not enough. That's why you get I/O errors on the 720th 1k block of a 720K disk ;-) Hope this helps, Martin -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Dipl.Ing. Re: Screwed Partition
As has been pointed out to me by Matt Welsh. I forgot to put in the disk type. The disk in question is a Maxtor 213M (unformatted) IDE drive. If there is any thing else I have forgotten please let me know. Re: Linux and big disks
Your SCSI host does some sort of mapping between 3d (head, cylinder, and sector) coordinates as seen by BIOS and the native logical block addressing used by SCSI disks. You need to use whatever the SCSI board uses - see your documentation. -- Boycott AT&T for their absurd anti-BSDI lawsuit. | Drew Eckhardt Condemn Colorado for Amendment Two. | drew@cs.colorado.edu Use Linux, the fast, flexible, and free 386 unix |

Agreed, but the hardware was the best they could do with the resources at their disposal... *and* they did try to get a better O/S standardised as soon as they possibly could. ProDOS is another O/S to add to my list of Perhaps, but he did the best job he could and still fit into that opening. And he kept working on real improvements. Microsoft *still* hasn't done anything to substantially improve MS-DOS since DOS 2.1. -- %Peter da Silva/77487-5012 USA/+1 713 274 5180/Have you hugged your ...

Re: Minicom Hiccup
I've had this problem when in minicom, and found the only way I could get out of it was to get into Minicom's menu, change the terminal emulation to something else, Minix usually, and then set it back to vt100. That cleared up the problem.

Richard Stallman and the FSF are looking ahead to a more civillised society where a person who has no money would not starve. Somehow I cannot think of Bill Gates as having the same altruistic attitude. Too many people are perpetuating an attitude that all life must be a struggle and that money is a part of the natural order of the universe. In the GNU manifesto a thing called the post-scarcity society is mentioned. I'd say this goal is much more worthy than ...
