        I would appreciate it if people would report the firmware revision
level for the Adaptec when they report these types of problems (look for the
number that the Adaptec bios prints at boot-up).  There have been problems with
older versions of the firmware on various machines, and this could in fact be
related to the trouble that some people are having.  The current revision level
is apparently 3.10 (I know someone who bought a new one over the weekend, and
this is what it came with).

        Also, you might want to check with Adaptec tech support and see if they
can shed any light on the matter.
