I had a similar problem when I installed Xfree86. In my case there were two problems
the first one was that the X server started and then promptly aborted without
restoring text mode correctly. Like you I then had to reboot as the display is screwed.
The second problem was that the server aborted because the default Xconfig file
(Xconfig.sample) that I copied to Xconfig in /usr/X386/lib/X11 had the line
Logitech "/dev/tty00"
for the mouse. There is no /dev/tty00 in the /dev directory for Linux. I have a serial
mouse so I changed /dev/tty00 to /dev/ttys1 and then X fired up OK. There was no
useful error message however to tell me what was wrong it was just a case of trial
and error.
The xinit error messages that you are getting are because the X server is not running.
Hope this helps.
