Where is the problem in rebuilding the kernel? Just edit the Makefile in

It looks like rza has write permissions on directory /etc. By default,
uemacs renames the original file to a backup name, then writes the changed

write. A user does not have to have write permission on a file to rename
or delete it, just write permission on the **directory** where the file lives.
Check the permissions on /etc - you should find something like:

I can answer number 2 for you, but the others I haven't a clue on.
To patch, get all three patches and uncompress them. cd to /usr/src/linux
and do a patch -p < linux-0.98.patch? 2> error.log
Do this for each patch in order. After each patch look at the error.log
and find any failed patches. These will have to be patched by hand.
I beleive the FAQ has an example on how to do this.

You have to setup inittab to recognize the serial line correctly. Try
getting getty_ps from tsx-11.mit.edu for this. Then, put ttys2 in your
securetty file so it will allow root logins. This isn't a good idea
normally, so you may just want to setup getty to allow logins over ttys2
