I can answer number 2 for you, but the others I haven't a clue on.
To patch, get all three patches and uncompress them. cd to /usr/src/linux
and do a patch -p < linux-0.98.patch? 2> error.log

Do this for each patch in order. After each patch look at the error.log
and find any failed patches. These will have to be patched by hand.
I beleive the FAQ has an example on how to do this.
