You have to setup inittab to recognize the serial line correctly. Try
getting getty_ps from tsx-11.mit.edu for this. Then, put ttys2 in your
securetty file so it will allow root logins. This isn't a good idea 
normally, so you may just want to setup getty to allow logins over ttys2
and then just su to root from there.
