i've just compiled groff and am using the man binaries from 
tsx sources/usr.bin/man-1.0
on certain (most) man requests, i get:

  syntax error near '|'
  -c:2: ` | /usr/bin/groff -Tascii -mandoc | /usr/bin/less -s)'

what have i done wrong?
