Can't boot 0.98 (part 2)

I decided to follow up on my first message since I suspect there
might be a problem with the 0.98 images I got from tsx-11.
In my previous post I described that the 0.98 boot would "hang".
I've got the 0.97 boot image since, and successfully ran it
on my machine (at least to the point where it asks for the root image).

I made the following observation comparing the 0.97 and 0.98 behavior
(and not knowing how different the two are):

0.98 boot sequence went like this:

Loading....
(then it described some ROW/COL formats)
Chose mode by ...

(At this point the 0.97 code stops, waiting for response but the
        0.98 code continues...)

ttys0 at ...

(Here 0.98 hangs, but continues after I hit <CR>)
ttys1 at ...
8 virtual consoles
lp_init ...
No Logitech bus mouse...

(And it hangs for real. There's a way to poke it a little further
by hitting <SCROLL> but I couldn't figure out how to use this).

=====

The fact that the console input is interleaved with the output from
the sio probes suggests that there's some race in the code.

I haven't got much further; I tried 0.98 root image (with the 0.97 bot)
but it hung after "Free mem xxxxxxx bytes" and I didn't have time to
get a copy of 0.97 root image.

I got the boot image in question from tsx-11 (images) and it has
the following identifier in it:
Linux version 0.98-22 (root@home) 09/29/92 21:12:04

Suggestions?
Thanks,
-Z
