I use pax on a Sparcstation 2 to write multi-volume  files.  
Linus Pax reads them without problem IF they have no bad
blocks.  Pax seems to try and write over bad-blocks on the
Sparc.  Check the disks first, or check the Pax'ed file 
against the original(s).
