I had my paradise working fine with X before I got a new video card.

What you might want to do is make sure you aren't setting any clocks
in Xconfig, and set the chipset to pvga. Then do a startx >& log.file
Look in the file and see what clocks it gave you. Then put these in your
clocks line in Xconfig. 

I remember that X couldn't find my card unless I speceified chipset in the
Xconfig. But, that was one version back for X. Make sure you are using 
Xfree86 from tsx-11.mit.edu
