BIOS setup problems

Hi, Linuxers,
someone reported (excuse this kind of quotation, I communicate with
you not via some newsreader at USENET but via plain mail to
Linux-Activists@news-digests.mit.edu - thanks for this possibility !!-)
that while rebooting after a linux session he find himself in the
BIOS Setup menu since the CMOS RAM has lost his data.
I experienced the same.
A question: Is this a bug?
An observation: I switched of the "bios shadow ram" option in this
bios setup and since that my box works ok.
But I do not understand this. Who writes to the bios ram?
