Hi,
I wonder if anybody has come across the following problem and know of any
way of solving it. I helped a friend to install Linux on his new machine
the other day. I was using the SLS distribution (the latest one) and
everything seemed to work fine except when I tried to start X. After typing
'startx' the system simply rebooted after a few seconds. The machine has a
 486DX2 50Mhz processor, 256k cache, and a Tseng Labs ET4000 Hicolor card.
The funny thing is when I disabled the cache , everything worked ! With the
256k cache disabled, I can now start X with no problems. But as soon as the
cache is enabled, X will not start up.
Someone suggested that the ram might be too slow and so I increased the
DRAM access wait states to 2 (and even 3), but still it didn't work.
There are no apparent problems with the cache when using DOS.
Does anybody know why this is so, and how do I get X to work with the cache
enabled ? Any help and suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks.
