Hi!
Please ignore my last message. 
Someone (Lars.Wirzenius@helsinki.fi) contacted me and motivated me to 
retrieve the bootimage from another server. 
Note that I didn't got the bootimage from nic.funet.fi (as I said) but
from tupac.amaru ... .de. The file must be 
corrupted there. After being uncompressed, it was about 145K size.
I retrieved it now from rs3.hrz.th-darmstadt.de (in my home city),
and there it gave >300 K size. After a new rawrite all worked well
with all three machines. Now I am set up to install Linux via SLS
disks on my own machine...
