Having indicated some problems I had with the SLS release of linux (lilo, tcpip, etc), and sugesting that I might clear things up regarding where things go, I was encouraged to go ahead. Will try to find the time in the next week. My problems with non-root users running ps and top was easy to fix: put ps and top in the mem group so they can read /dev/kmem. IMHO, it's a security breach to make /dev/kmem world readable, as was suggested. Logging in was a different matter for non-root users: I had to make /usr/users world readable (it wasn't by default). The problems with lilo and tcpip (bug in config and references to nonexistent /usr/etc/inet files) are easy to fix, and I'll be glad to provide my fixed versions. However, I've noticed that SLS tries to put config, rc.net, etc. in /etc and the tcpip package wants them in /usr/etc/inet. lilo has similar problems: SLS puts a version in /usr/bin and the ALPHA/lilo (later) version likes to go into /etc/lilo. My preference is to put stuff where the originator suggests it should go (unless some higher "authority" prevails: kernel source stuff really does belong in /usr/src/linux 'cause that's where Linus puts it even though someone else may originate the code). Since SLS does a fairly good job of packaging stuff, I guess I'll come up with a set of patches that overlay SLS installed stuff: i.e., my idea of where lilo and tcpip belong, once SLS has done it's stuff. Thus, I can install stuff my way after installing SLS stuff. I presume that SLS will either fix their stuff, or adopt my installation scheme. Either way, I'll be able to abandon my "POST-SLS install stuff" eventually. With regard to zxfix, zafix, and Perms: I can't install z[xa]fix with SLS: doinstall complains about /usr/tmp being missing. I'll try to come up with a set of Perms that are "more" correct. Trying to get X386 up on a ATI Vantage/ULTRA card. Trouble is, I've got no specs for my monitor... only know that its made by Compaq and only seems to like 60 Hz vert. retrace. (My "real" monitor died). Can anyone provide Xconfig related help? Rene Hollan hollan@inrs-telecom.uquebec.ca
