I have a similar though less disasterous problem in that when I start
X the monitor I have appears to close down the display. All I have to do is
power cycle the monitor and X is there and waiting. Aside from the
mild annoyance caused by this behavior there is some concern that it
may onceday cause perminent damage to the monitor. The system is a
Cardinal 742 (ET4000) SVGA, a KFC 15" Monitor running from a 50Mh 486
