Finally got back around to this - a 1.10.1 bulk worked just fine on a 
striped CCD, so it does look to be some kind of vinum / acpi interaction 
on this hardware.

When I have time (ha) trying to get caught up on disklabels / vfs etc.
so I can take a crack at zeroing in on it.
