This seems to work for me:
# CFLAGS+='-g' INSTALL_UNSTRIPPED=yes bmake

I came up with that just by grepping through /usr/pkgsrc/mk/* which
is worth a look (or several) just to get a feel for what kinds of
bullets you can put through your own foot  :o)
