Website Updated

KernelTrap has been updated to Drupal 6. We're running a fair bit of custom code, so please let me know if you find anything broken or if any of your favorite features are missing. And yes, this upgrade is the first step toward getting regular posts on the website again.

The biggest behind the scenes change was updating Drupal from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6. I've also added a small collection of social networking modules you can find by clicking 'My account' when you're logged in. Other similar features will be added as time permits.

Going forward, the biggest remaining task left for me to do is to improve the mailarchive module to be able to handle the number of emails reaching the lkml and other kernel mailing lists. I'll be sharding the data to solve the immediate performance issues, and then will look to better integrate it with Sphinx offloading expensive SQL queries. Once that is done, I finally intend to return to reading the mailing lists and posting summaries on these pages.

RSS feeds work! OpenID support?

on
July 22, 2009 - 1:07am

Apparently Kerneltrap's RSS feeds have not appearing in Google Reader for me, until now... go figure.

With the upgrade to Drupal 6, can KernelTrap support OpenID? It's a core Drupal module that can be enabled in one-click, and makes logging into KernelTrap that much easier.

OpenID Enabled

Sure -- I've gone ahead and enabled OpenID logins.

OpenID error

on
July 23, 2009 - 2:17pm

Tried logging in with my OpenID from MyOpenID.com and got the folowing error:

* The username contains an illegal character.
* You must enter an e-mail address.
* OpenID registration failed for the reasons listed. You may register now, or if you already have an account you can log in now and add your OpenID under "My Account"

Hope this helps...

What username?

on
July 24, 2009 - 10:02am

What is your username? Does it contain "special" characters? It seems this may be a limitation of Drupal's current login framework -- here's the code that's validating usernames:
http://api.drupal.org/api/function/user_validate_name

Based on this very old forum post, it's not an especially new issue either:
http://drupal.org/node/10882

This patch appears to be focused on cleaning this up, though without knowing what your username is I can't confirm that the patches there would help anything:
http://drupal.org/node/266488

The actual patch:

Thanks for your continued work on this site. I (and most others, I assume) appreciate the time and effort you put into this.

Now fix the pages so they display correctly in FF

Now if you could just fix the web pages so that they display correctly in Firefox!

For instance, fix the pages so that hovering over a link doesn't make the entire page bounce downward. The menu is especially bad about this.

Secondly, fix the sidebar so that it doesn't cover the article text.

no such problem here, update

no such problem here, update your ff?

Font issue perhaps?

on
August 12, 2009 - 11:55am

I've had that problem from some machines but not others, and I think it's a weird font related issue. In general, I know fonts seem screwy on my work computer that runs RHEL 4. (Some fonts even display with what looks like a mixture of font sizes!)

I don't have the problems you mention here on my Ubuntu box at home with Firefox 3.

Yay!

I just tried looking at past updates and noticed that the news and blog posts don't seem to have a date displayed for them. Is this intentional or a problem with your theme?

theme

on
July 22, 2009 - 10:03am

It's an issue with the theme -- I've not yet had time to review what's changed, but it's on my list of issues to fix. Thanks.

Where has they been? Where have you been?
We need some other editors on the website.

RSS Feeds not working correctly

on
July 23, 2009 - 1:01am

Hi Jeremy,

My blog's RSS feed isn't working correctly. It is including stuff from other blog/forum entries as well. Blog URL : http://kerneltrap.org/blog/3986

Could you please take a look?

Thanks,
Kedar.

Will review

on
July 23, 2009 - 9:21am

Hello Kedar,

Yes, I've added it to my list of items to review as time permits. Hopefully sooner than later! Sorry for the hassle.

Cool, thanks!

gentle reminder

on
September 11, 2009 - 7:32am

Hi Jeremy,

Just making sure this hasn't slipped your list of things to fix. RSS feeds seem to collect a lot of other articles for my blog(http://kerneltrap.org/blog/3986/)

Thanks again,
Kedar.

which

on
September 11, 2009 - 8:02am

What are the specific items that are showing up that should not be?

I have confirmed that http://kerneltrap.org/blog/3986 matches http://kerneltrap.org/blog/3986/feed

Hmm....

on
September 11, 2009 - 8:22am

Ok, I guess the RSS feed URL changed?

My aggregator was accessing:
http://kerneltrap.org/blog/feed/3986
instead of
http://kerneltrap.org/blog/3986/feed

Or maybe my bad!

Thanks for the help,
Kedar.

Great!

Add entry timestamps

I normally read via RSS, but it seems that there are no dates displayed next to the entries on the kerneltrap.org/ main page. It'd be nice to know on what date posts were made because right now the only way seems get that information is to view the comments.

Lesson learned?

Let's hope we won't get any new article titled "This should be the last one"...

More seriously though, why is the homepage field mandatory? I don't have one.

Good to see you again

Problem with weave login

on
July 26, 2009 - 11:48pm

This is what I did:

1) On the frontpage, I click 'Login'
2) Then 'Sign in using Weave'.
3) I'm shown the animated Mozilla
4) I get logged in
5) But this page: http://kerneltrap.org/user/login shows "Access denied You are not authorized to access this page."

I do get logged in properly but that error message is clearly wrong.

Good to have you back Jeremy.

Really great to have you back!
Kerneltrap used to belong to my top 5 sites I checked out everyday until the news (aside from the popular mailinglist posts) stopped coming.
So a few days ago I was cleaning up the favorites on my N800 and just wanted to perform one last check before finally deleting this site from my favorites. And man, was I surprised to read your post about the drupal update. So now I'm back to checking for news everyday and I can't wait til you have sorted out the last problems with the new site engine and start posting kernel-news again.
So once more: Great to have you back!

Thanks

on
August 4, 2009 - 11:17pm

I appreciate the kind feedback. I've had less time than I hoped since making that post, but do hope to get everything working soon.

Left to do: 1) get the mailarchive download the lkml again -- it hung many months back due to performance issues, I've fixed some of it but evidently not enough. 2) get the spam filters working properly on this version of Drupal, too much spam is slipping through (usually completely bypassing the filters, somehow). #1 is the real priority, but #2 will probably end up happening first because it rather annoys me.

the spam filter kills me

I'll just echo the happiness of seeing KernelTrap back! I too was just checking to see if there was any activity before deleting it from my bookmarks.

I thought this site was a great resource for those of us trying to keep up with developments in the world of free software. Like a thinking man's OSNews.com, if you will :-) So I'm delighted to see it back and hope to see more articles coming, even if not at such a high pace.

If there's anything your loyal readers can do to help get the content flowing, let us know.

September 2, 2009 - 2:13am

My list of what's left to do before I'll start writing articles again is down to finishing my optimization effort of the Drupal mailarchive module so that it can start archiving lkml messages again. I started when I posted this original note, but then ran out of time. I'm currently at a conference in Paris, so it's doubtful I'll find the time to dig into this fully until mid-September...

Hurrah!

OpenID

on
August 27, 2009 - 10:39am

I think your OpenID is broken. This is not my account. And your spam filter is not allowing me to post so I'm adding a few more words.

Same problem

I have the same problem. You should take a look at it and check it up. Thanks.

not your account?

on
August 31, 2009 - 4:52am

When you say "this is not my account", are you saying that you somehow logged into someone else's account?

Its literal, I will Copy & Paste the email I was given

on
August 31, 2009 - 5:05am

Which went as follows:

Hi,
You don't know me, but I was able to login to your account at http://kerneltrap.org/ using my OpenID. Just thought I would let you know.

That Shows somebody was allowed to use my OpenID token and log in to my account on this site!! I checked the OpenID provider ip-log, and there was no back-filter to my main authentication, but he was allowed into my account... to email me and inform me of such a security flaw, which I thanked him for not being a malicious individual.

I have since taken out all but one OpenID provider from this site and will not add it agai until this issue in Drupal is bug fixed.

disabled

on
September 1, 2009 - 3:40am

Okay, I've disabled the OpenID module and will follow up to see if there are any known issues with this module. I'm at the DrupalCon now in Paris, so ample opportunity to ask around.

And to clarify your question,

on
August 31, 2009 - 5:08am

And to clarify your question, indeed that post was NOT made by myself, it was posted by the person which gained access to my account from a OpenID token mis-authentication or re-used OpenID token and tried to voice his concerns the only way he could since the spam-filter is being a bit strong.
