To use a really specific example, Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Electrodynamics - two of our best present theories - are in conflict. Stating that they "aren't valid" is a copout against how science works. We just end up using them, and trying to find some way we can actually get at the edge cases that may give us a clue to how to unify them.
