I toyed around a bit with Fedora Core 4 Test 1. I didn't get too much time with it, because soon after I finally got the ISOs downloaded, FC4T2 was released.
There was one glaring problem with FC4T1. After installing in a freshly-created VM, the first boot to the GUI desktop hung. After a few minutes I lost patience and switched to a console. There, "top" showed that "gdm" and "syslogd" were competing to see who could consume the most CPU time. A quick "yum update gdm" retrieved an update, and one reboot later the system was happy.
VMware recently released VMware Workstation 5.0. Although none of the Fedora releases are listed as "officially supported" guest operating systems, it appears that FC3 installs and runs right out-of-the-box. No patching or hacking is required.
That said, the system still responds quite well to a bit of performance tweaking (minimizing the services running, and minimizing the kernel). This is strictly optional, though.
Fedora Core 3 Test 3 was recently released, and as usual, requires a slight bit of tweaking to run under VMware. So, here we go.

While it is possible to run Fedora Core 2 under VMware Workstation (see this blog entry), its performance kinda sucks. It can be made much more "snappy" by a) disabling unnecessary services, and b) recompiling the kernel with just the minimal required features. This article describes in detail the steps I used to configure my FC2 workstation running under VMware 4.5.2.
This is a followup to my previous post. Running Fedora Core 2 (final) under VMware Workstation 4.5.2 is a little simpler now. Here are some hints to get it running.

After a bit of tweaking this evening, I got Fedora Core 2 Test 3 running under VMware 4.5.1. Here's how.
