Since Linus has encouraged more regular users to use 2.5.40, I downloaded, compiled and started using it last week. The following are some thoughts from using it at work. First impression: it still has some stability problems. Linus released .41, I should see whether that fixes some. Problems: occasionally XWindow will simply die. Not freeze, Server will restart, dumping all open programs and returning me to KDM. Not nice. Yestreday it happened 3 times. First was after running ~5 hours, with lots of programs open. The second was about 3 hours later, with fewer programs working, and the final was when I logged out. Well, the last one was different because the system did freeze. Unfortunately it was at quitting time and I was in too much a rush to get out of here (us hourly workers are often like that :) )
Two months ago our CTO/CIO (not really certain which title she has) decides to investigate Linux and other Open Source operating systems. Not coincidentally this was the same time the new Microsoft Licensing Scheme started. It fell upon me to investigate these 'alternate' OSs, since I was the only one to have extensive use of anything besides Windows.
Brief rundown: most of my OS use can be classified as Commercial Desktop/OS. MacOS 6-9, OS/2 2.xx (never got to play with Warp or newer although I always wanted to), MS-DOS 3.xx-7.00, IBM-DOS 7.xx, FreeDOS (about 8 years ago, it's come a long way since then), BeOS, Linux (since 1995) and well, you get the picture.
