Agreed. MM plays an important role. But it is not a stable tree by any means. AC has has huge crediblity within the community for maintaining a stable tree. The problem then becomes backporting ofcourse, but that is better that the drop in kernel quality the currently occurs with major 2.6.X releases, IMHO.
