Linux 2.6.23-rc6

Linux news

Linus Torvalds announced the sixth release candidate of the upcoming 2.6.23 kernel, a final release expected within the next few weeks. He noted:

"So last week was a bust, with a lot of core people away for the kernel summit, and with -rc5 having two rather nasty (and silly) one-liner problems that bit a number of people - a missing NULL pointer check in TCP, and a missing list terminator in ata_piix.

"So the fixes for those things were both pretty trivial, and they've been in the -git trees for the last few days, but I just pushed out an -rc6 that also merges up some other updates that did come in during the week."

The -rc6 source level changes can be browsed via the gitweb interface.

So last week was a bust, with a lot of core people away for the kernel
summit, and with -rc5 having two rather nasty (and silly) one-liner
problems that bit a number of people - a missing NULL pointer check in
TCP, and a missing list terminator in ata_piix.

So the fixes for those things were both pretty trivial, and they've been
in the -git trees for the last few days, but I just pushed out an -rc6
that also merges up some other updates that did come in during the week.

Most of the diff is just some m32r reorg, but see the appended shortlog
and diffstat for details.

It is not stable

I was running 2.6.23-rc2 through rc4 without any problems (the kernel is now released soooo slowly, rc levels now appear at the rate that 'stable' versions once appeared. On two machines, 2.6.23-rc5 would regularly hang with blinking LED's, usually after a failed 'connect' to a web site. I conclude this is somewhere in the TCP/IP part of the kernel, yet the change logs show no fixes related to that for 2.6.23-rc6. So I think if this rc6 becomes golden, the bug will [eventually] be found and [possibly] fixed for 2.6.23.1. For now I have reverted to 2.6.22.6 because I do not have time to be a guinea pig for a broken development process.

I think you need to look more closely at the log and the Linus's e-mail. Linus explicitly mentions the null pointer check for TCP and this:

David S. Miller (1):
[TCP]: 'dst' can be NULL in tcp_rto_min()

is in the change log.

WTF? That a RELEASE CANDIDATE has a bug is a "broken development process"? It's an RC to test for bugs, you found one, it got fixed (and if you learned how to read, you'd also have known that).

When you decided to use RCs, YOU decided to be a guinea pig.

i got dasblinkenlights too

i got dasblinkenlights too in rc5. this rc6 is supposed to fix that... haven't had any problems on two amd64 machines yet...
