Frederic Lepied announced the hardware4linux.info website on the Linux Kernel mailing list, "the site is collecting hardware compatibilities and incompatibilities with Linux distributions in a collaborative way: users run a hardware collector program, upload the resulting file and then rate and comment how their hardware works."
The project's website goes on to explain, "components are rated according to their Linux compatibility. You'll see on the site some numbers like 4.5 x 2 for rated components. This means that the mean note for the component is 4.5 and that 2 persons have noted this component." The rating scale goes from -5 "does not work" up to 5 "works out of the box".

Hello,
Now that the site has a few months of life, it's time to advertize its
existence to the kernel community! The site is collecting hardware
compatibilities and incompatibilities with Linux distributions in a
collaborative way: users run a hardware collector program, upload the
resulting file and then rate and comment how their hardware works. You
could be interested in the pages around kernel modules:
http://hardware4linux.info/modules/. You can also access to the
information concerning PCI and USB devices using the following urls:
http://hardware4linux.info/pci/////
http://hardware4linux.info/usb///.
Any feedback welcome!

Why do I need to login with username/passwd to send my report?
The reporting step is too complicated.
Let people send and update their report from the CLI. Remove the login or add a [Anonymous] button. Keep it quick & easy.
Re: Why do I need to login with username/passwd to send my repor
We need to associate the uploaded hardware with the right person to have him rate and comment only the hardware he has.

LinuxQuestions.org HCL?
Can anyone see an advantage to this over the Hardware Compatibility List at LinuxQuestions.org? Seems to me they have basically the same purpose, and the HCL already has lots of good ratings in it.
Re: LinuxQuestions.org HCL?
The idea is to collect automatically to avoid errors and to link directly to the running distribution.

What about people running with hand-rolled kernels?
